Mongolia also has a very  long tradition of music and old tradition of music since the 12th century.  Mongolian traditional musical instrument called Morin Khuur or Mandarin referred to as "Matauqin" which means horse-headed musical instruments.  Morin Khuur is Mongolian traditional musical instruments such as violin strings with tip curved like a horse's head.  Mongol melody is usually a "pentatonic harmony" with the end of a long tone.  Elements of traditional Mongolian music is the way of the Mongols sing who used the technique of singing with throat. Morin Khuur vary in shape depending on the area.


This device consists of a wooden sound box framed in a trapezium shape with two straps fastened.  It is designed almost vertical with a round sound box between the legs of musicians or musicians.  Rope made of nylon or two horses will be suspended in parallel on a wooden bridge on the body up a long neck and two smaller departments for the two tuning pegs are usually carved in the shape of a horse head.

Quality nylon rope can last up to 2 years if available and properly attached to the instrument.  Most of the musicians who at first did not brush the rope will cause the sound quality gets worse and fast.  Good rope is sounds like steel ropes and in their spectrograms show about 7-8 harmonics.

 In the last 2000 years, a variety of musical instruments spread across Asia through various local design modifications.  Although several different Asian countries Mongolia tends to Khuur Morin has developed and adopted in the country.  Ancient times and Mongol nomadic Mongolians on horseback led the design of musical instruments related to themselves.


There are many festivals held to celebrate the importance of this instrument to the Mongolian culture as biannual "International Morin Huur Festival" organized by the " Morinhuur World
Association".  The festival was first held in 2008 and two in 2010 involving eight countries participating namely Mongolia, Korea, China, Russia, United States, Germany, France, and Japan.
In addition in June "Gemuruh Hooves Festival" will be held.  This is a small celebration for skilled professional players but unfortunately festival was closed.  In addition, the national festival "Naadam" is a song of praise will be played to a very large horse wrestlers and the highest ranked archer.  These songs are called "Magtaal" and comes with a unique style that compliments and played with Khuur Morin.


Morin Khuur was introduced orally by apprentices for future generations.  However forty years ago, most people Mongols have settled in urban centers caused them to forget and not interested in Morin Khuur.  However the pastoral communities in southern Mongolia which has managed to keep alive many aspects Morin Khuur to play musical instruments together in the rituals and customs related.
